The 1839‑C Classic Head Quarter Eagle stands as one of the defining creations of the Charlotte Mint, a frontier institution whose gold coinage reflects both regional identity and early federal aspiration. As a Type II, distinguished by its recut date and subtle die quirks, this issue embodies the technical irregularities and low‑mintage allure that have long captivated specialists in Southern gold. This monochrome master study is devoted to a single PCGS‑certified survivor of that storied date, yet it draws upon multiple photographic encounters with the same coin—auction plates, certification images, and private catalog photography. Each source reveals a slightly different truth; together they form the composite foundation from which the drawing extracts a unified sculptural likeness.

In the obverse rendering, Liberty’s portrait becomes an exploration of movement, mass, and form rather than metal or color. Her hair, which on the actual coin appears as a shifting shimmer of gold under directional light, is reinterpreted as a cascade of greys and blacks that rise and fall across the page. The fillet inscribed with LIBERTY, the ring of thirteen stars, and the boldly punched date with its distinctive “C” mintmark are all articulated with measured precision. The federal eagle, lifted from the same Charlotte specimen, is rebuilt feather by feather in a tightly controlled monochromatic spectrum. The shield on its breast asserts a crisp geometry that plays against the organic rhythm of wings and tail, while the olive branch and arrows anchor the composition in symbols of peace and preparedness. Lettering and denticles are not merely copied; they are observed, compared, and re‑articulated until spacing, tilt, and cadence resolve into a balanced architectural whole. What emerges is a portrait of the design as it is experienced in hand rather than as it appears in any single photograph.

Underlying the surface is a quiet alchemy of repetition. The drawing evolves through successive generations—drawn, scanned, reprinted on fresh paper, and drawn again—each pass allowing new layers of oil‑ and wax‑based pencil to accumulate without sacrificing delicacy. This iterative method imparts a depth approaching low relief: fields recede, devices lift, and light circulates across the image much as it does across the original gold.

As a monochrome work, the study sets aside the seduction of color to reveal the underlying grammar of the 1839‑C: proportion, rhythm, and the subtle asymmetries that distinguish Charlotte gold from its Philadelphia counterparts.
