The Artistic Process

From Observation to Artistic Interpretation

Every drawing begins with observation.

American coins and currency are remarkable examples of miniature art. Within their limited dimensions are portraits, sculptural forms, intricate engraving, lettering, and details that are easily overlooked at their original scale.

My objective is to bring those qualities into view through a combination of technical precision and artistic interpretation.

The Original Drawing

My background in engineering and technical illustration has strongly influenced my approach to drawing. Accuracy, proportion, structure, and attention to detail are fundamental to my work.

But precision alone does not define the finished artwork.

As I develop a drawing, I make decisions concerning light, shadow, tonal relationships, texture, and the visual emphasis of individual features. These choices allow me to remain faithful to the original subject while creating an interpretation that can be appreciated independently of the coin or currency specimen.

Enlargement is particularly important. Features that appear insignificant at their original scale can become prominent sculptural elements when examined through drawing.

The Monochrome Masters

Monochrome drawing has become an increasingly important part of my artistic development.

By working without color, I can concentrate on the fundamental sculptural qualities of the subject: form, relief, surface texture, and the interaction of light and shadow.

The monochrome masters are original drawings in their own right. They also provide the foundation for additional artistic presentations.

In these studies, the familiar appearance of a coin gives way to a closer examination of the engraver's artistry and the physical character of the design.

Artistic Composition and Digital Development

The completion of an original drawing does not necessarily mark the end of the creative process.

I use Adobe Photoshop to develop selected drawings into finished artistic compositions, experimenting with enlargement, layered imagery, contrasting scales, backgrounds, and reflected images.

A detailed monochrome master may be presented against an enlarged interpretation of another part of the design. In other compositions, the obverse and reverse are arranged together to establish new visual relationships.

These digital compositions originate with my original drawings, but represent a further stage of artistic interpretation.

The objective is not simply to reproduce the drawing in another format. It is to explore how composition and presentation can change the way the viewer experiences the subject.

Full-Color Interpretations

Color introduces another dimension to my work.

Where monochrome emphasizes the underlying sculptural structure, color allows me to explore surface characteristics, tonal variations, and visual qualities that contribute to the identity of an individual specimen.

The relationship between precision and interpretation remains essential. I seek to preserve the recognizable character of the original subject while developing a compelling artistic presentation.

Fine-Art Reproduction

Selected drawings and finished compositions are prepared for reproduction as fine-art prints.

Digital preparation allows me to control image dimensions, tonal relationships, color, and presentation so that the finished print communicates the qualities of the underlying artwork as faithfully as practical.

Different print formats, substrates, and presentations are selected according to the intended collecting program.

Original drawings, digitally composed presentations, and printed reproductions are distinct forms of the work, each identified according to its nature and method of production.

An Evolving Artistic Journey

Since beginning this body of work in 2022, my approach has continued to evolve.

What began as a disciplined exploration of American numismatic designs has expanded into monochrome master studies, increasingly complex compositions, historic currency, and specialized artistic publications.

Each new work presents another opportunity to examine familiar subjects in an unfamiliar way.

Precision establishes the foundation. Artistic interpretation determines what the viewer discovers.
