American Money Through an Artist's Eyes
This gallery presents selected drawings from Robert Julian's continuing exploration of American coins and currency, a body of work developed since 2022.
Combining meticulous precision with artistic interpretation, these drawings reveal the sculptural form, intricate engraving, surface character, and historical individuality of their subjects.
The collection includes commissioned portraits of significant numismatic specimens, monochrome master studies emphasizing form and light, and full-color interpretations that explore the distinctive visual qualities of individual coins and currency.
Some drawings document a particular specimen, preserving its unique characteristics and provenance. Others examine the artistry of the underlying design, independent of any single example.
Together, the works illustrate an evolving artistic practice in which technical accuracy provides the foundation for individual interpretation.
