The 1907 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle is widely regarded as the pinnacle of American coinage design. Conceived by sculptor Augustus Saint‑Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, it was intended to elevate U.S. coinage to the level of classical art. Struck with extraordinary depth and detail, the Ultra High Relief required multiple blows of the press to bring up its full design, making it impractical for mass production. Only a few dozen were struck, and today it stands as one of the most iconic rarities in the entire U.S. series.

This specimen, certified PR68 by PCGS, is among the absolute finest known. Its surfaces are virtually flawless, with deeply mirrored fields that contrast dramatically against the frosted devices. Liberty strides forward with torch and olive branch, her gown flowing in sculptural folds, while the rising sun radiates behind her. On the reverse, a majestic eagle soars above the sun’s rays, its wings fully extended in Saint‑Gaudens’ most dynamic rendering of the national emblem. The coin’s golden surfaces shimmer with satiny luster, accented by subtle orange and rose highlights.

The Ultra High Relief was struck in extremely limited numbers, with estimates ranging from 15 to 25 examples surviving today. Each was a presentation piece, never intended for circulation, and each required painstaking effort at the Mint. The rarity of the type, combined with its artistic significance, has made it one of the most desirable coins in the world. This PR68 ranks at the very top of the Condition Census, a level of preservation that few numismatic treasures of any era can claim.

Auction appearances are rare and headline‑making. In January 2021, a PR68 example realized $4.75 million at Heritage, underscoring the extraordinary demand for this type. The present coin, acquired through private transaction, most likely traded in a similar multi‑million‑dollar range, reflecting both its technical quality and its place among the finest known survivors. Each offering of an Ultra High Relief is a landmark event, drawing global attention from collectors, investors, and institutions alike.

The historical resonance of this coin is profound. It represents Roosevelt’s “Renaissance of American Coinage,” a moment when artistry and national identity converged in gold. The Ultra High Relief was too impractical for circulation, but its beauty set the standard for the High Relief and later flat‑relief issues that followed. It remains a tangible expression of Roosevelt’s vision and Saint‑Gaudens’ genius, a masterpiece of medallic art struck in precious metal. Its survival in such pristine condition elevates it beyond rarity into the realm of cultural icon.

Now part of the Elite Collection—one of the most refined private cabinets ever assembled—this 1907 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle stands as both a trophy coin and a cultural artifact. Its anonymous owner has curated a group of rarities that define the uppermost echelon of American numismatics, and this piece is among its crown jewels. Within that context, it serves not only as a testament to Saint‑Gaudens’ artistry but also as a symbol of the enduring allure of American coinage at its most ambitious
